Terminology

Most WAPA members are WISPs using Wifi to provide outdoor FWA services.

A glossary of terminology:

  • WISP – Wireless Internet Service Provider
  • FWA – Fixed Wireless Access
  • OFW – Outdoor Fixed Wireless: Usually 5.8Ghz 802.11a Wifi technology for outdoor use
  • INW – Indoor Nomadic Wireless: Usually 2.4Ghz 802.11b/g Wifi technology used for Hotspots
  • POE – Power over Ethernet
  • Lite Licencing – A shared frequency assignment model
